SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Vail Resorts announced its operating plan for the upcoming ski and snowboard season that includes reservations, physical distancing on chairlifts and face coverings amid COVID-19.
Vail operates 34 resorts in North America and said they are committed to safety and the winter operating plan is an “outfront approach with the goal of ensuring a safe, enjoyable and successful season.” “We are fortunate that our core experience of skiing and riding takes place outdoors, across huge mountains, offering fresh air and wide-open spaces for our guests,” said Vail CEO/President Rob Katz in a press release. “However, to help protect our guests, our employees and our communities amid this pandemic, some changes will be required this season. It has been our goal to design an approach that can remain in place for all of the 2020/21 season. We do not want to be caught off guard or find ourselves needing to make reactionary changes. Existing-home sales continued on a strong, upward trajectory in July, marking two consecutive months of significant sales gains, according to this month’s report by the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR). Each of the four major regions attained double-digit, month-over-month increases, while the Northeast was the only region to show a year-over-year decline. Total existing-home sales, completed transactions that include single-family homes, townhomes, condominiums and co-ops, jumped 24.7 percent from June to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.86 million in July. The previous record monthly increase in sales was 20.7 percent in June of this year. Sales as a whole rose year-over-year, up 8.7 percent from a year ago (5.39 million in July 2019). Growing up in Northern California, I spent my summers visiting the Tahoe Basin, learning to appreciate the natural environment. Those summers were filled with trips into the remarkable backcountry, biking around the lake’s 72-mile perimeter and swimming in its clear, blue water. It’s those memories that I would carry with me each year into the Lake Tahoe Summit – California and Nevada’s annual meeting to discuss the challenges facing our shared lake. The absorption rate is currently minus -.67. There are double the pending sales than there are listings which tells us that this picture will change even more skewed in the weeks to come. Can you say “Seller’s market” extreme? The bottom line is that the market is driving home prices upwards to 10% increase year over year and most of that has happened in the past 4 months. This phenomenon has been growing month over month as the pandemic (primarily) has launched a new appreciation, dare I say panic reaction, to being “boxed in” living in urban areas. This in a time when breathing fresh air and the space that it creates it, is a highly coveted commodity. A commodity whose time has come apparently.
